Since 2009, the Young Achievers Program (YAP) has provided a pathway to university for students from low SES backgrounds. Students commence their journey with the program from Year 11 and are provided targeted support and opportunities to engage with The University of Queensland.

The program provides targeted wrap-around support to ensure students can access, participate and succeed with their studies. This support includes mentorship, financial assistance, leadership development, and academic support, from Year 11 through to university graduation. The YAP journey empowers students to grow, connect, and thrive at the University. Surrounded by a supportive community, they gain the confidence, skills, and opportunities to pursue their ambitions and create a future filled with possibilities.

UQ student mentors play a vital role in the delivery and success of the Young Achievers Program. As a current UQ student, you generously volunteer your time to inspire, inform and encourage Young Achievers to pursue their educational ambitions. You draw on your own university experiences to provide relatable guidance, practical advice and encouragement throughout the student journey. Through supportive and meaningful connections, you act as a positive role model, helping Young Achievers build confidence, motivation and a sense of belonging at UQ. In doing so, you support the development of their leadership, interpersonal and communication skills, empowering them to thrive at university and beyond.

The program offers an extraordinary and fulfilling opportunity for both mentors and students.
YAP participants join a vibrant, inclusive community of peers and mentors who share their journey.
